IELTS Writing Task 2 is a 250-word academic essay responding to a specific question — agree/disagree, discuss both views, problem/solution, or two-part. The highest-scoring essays answer every part of that exact question with a clear position, developed ideas, and a logical four- or five-paragraph structure.
Plan before you write
- •Identify the question type and exactly what it asks — this decides your structure.
- •Decide your position and two main ideas, each with a reason and an example.
- •Introduction (paraphrase + your position) → two body paragraphs (one idea each) → conclusion (restate the position).
What earns marks
Answer the whole question with a clear, consistent position; develop each idea rather than listing many.
Use a range of accurate complex sentences and precise vocabulary. Accuracy matters more than showing off "big" words.

How long should an IELTS Task 2 essay be?
At least 250 words. Aim for around 260–290 well-organised words; padding does not raise your score.
Does Task 2 count more than Task 1?
Yes. Task 2 is weighted twice as heavily as Task 1 in the overall Writing band, so budget about 40 minutes for it.
