IELTS Listening tips: the four sections and how to prepare

IELTS Listening has four recordings that get progressively harder — from an everyday conversation to an academic lecture — with 40 questions in total. The recording plays once, so the winning habits are reading the questions ahead of each section and predicting what kind of answer each gap needs.

The four sections

  • Section 1: an everyday conversation, e.g. booking or enquiring (often form or note completion).
  • Section 2: a monologue about a place or plan (often map labelling and multiple choice).
  • Section 3: an academic discussion between two to four people.
  • Section 4: an academic lecture, played straight through without a pause.

Tips that work

  • Use the reading time before each section to predict answer types.
  • Listen for paraphrase; the recording rarely uses the exact words on the page.
  • Spelling counts, so write answers carefully, and never leave a blank.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IELTS Listening recording played twice?

No. You hear each recording only once, which is why reading the questions in advance and predicting answers matters so much.

Does spelling count in IELTS Listening?

Yes. A correctly heard but misspelled answer is marked wrong, so accurate spelling is essential.
