IELTS Speaking Part 3: how to discuss abstract questions

IELTS Speaking Part 3 is a four-to-five-minute discussion of more abstract questions linked to your Part 2 topic — about society, trends and opinions rather than yourself. Develop each answer with reasons, examples and, where relevant, both sides, treating it like a spoken mini-essay.

How to answer

  • Give an opinion, then justify it with a reason and an example; consider the other side where it fits.
  • Use signposting language: "on the one hand", "that said", "it depends on".
  • It is fine to speculate or generalise about people and society — that is what Part 3 asks for.

Frequently asked questions

How is Part 3 different from Part 1?

Part 1 is personal and concrete; Part 3 is abstract and analytical, asking you to discuss ideas, causes and trends at greater length.

What if I have no opinion on a Part 3 question?

Pick a position for the sake of the discussion and justify it, or discuss both sides — you are marked on how you develop the answer, not on the opinion itself.
