IELTS Speaking Part 1: how to answer the intro questions
IELTS Speaking Part 1 lasts four to five minutes and asks short, personal questions on familiar topics — where you live, your work or studies, your free time. Give answers that are a couple of sentences long: answer directly, then add a reason or example, without over-rehearsing.
How to answer
- •Answer the question directly, then extend with a reason, an example or a contrast — two to three sentences is ideal.
- •Avoid one-word answers and avoid memorised speeches; examiners recognise and discount rehearsed answers.
- •Keep it natural and conversational; Part 1 is warm-up, not the place for complex essays.
Frequently asked questions
How long should Part 1 answers be?
Two to three sentences: a direct answer plus a little development. Single words are too short; long monologues are unnecessary in Part 1.
Are Part 1 topics predictable?
The themes (home, work/study, hobbies, daily routine) are common and predictable, but you should sound spontaneous rather than reciting memorised answers.
